  1. One of my favorite "monsters" in literature is Tom Ripley. He is the protagonist in a series of books by Patricia Highsmith, the first of which is The Talented Mr. Ripley. Mr. Ripley is a sociopath -- self absorbed, amoral, and emotionless. Unlike everybody's favorite serial killer, Dexter, Tom Ripley is not a good guy trapped inside a serial killer's body. He just kills people when it helps him get what he wants. The weird thing is that you start to identify with him and to hope that he gets away from the police. Unsettling stuff.

  2. Favorite Monster #2: The Minotaur from Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series

In Book World, the Minotaur (Yes, that Minotaur: half man half bull.) is a convicted murderer. He has escaped from prison and gone underground living under the alias of Norman Johnson. He wants to kill Thursday Next. Fortunately for Thusday, the prison tainted him with slapstick so he’s easier to track. His appearance is always accompanied by slapstick (e.g. safes falling from windows, pedestrians slipping on banana peels, pie fights, clowns sporting squirting flowers on their lapels . . . ) Dangerous and hilarious.

  3. Besides dragons my favorite monster is from my favorite little kid book called The West Texas Chili Monster. He is big, fuzzy, and purple monster from space. His head is green and he has a large red mouth. He has two horns that come out of his head. He also has blue whiskers all around his mouth. In the book he goes to a chili contest and he eats all of the chili, but the one he eats last is the best and he gives the maker of the chili the space version of chili which is green, gooey and smells like tar. He isn't really scary, but I always like that book.

  4. Shannon,

I'm always amazed at how long we love books from childhood. I always enjoyed the weird critters from the Dr. Seuss books.

I really like the description of the West Texas Chili Monster -- sounds like my kind of monster.

  5. Hands down Best monster is the zombie. I now read every walking dead comic book known to man my favorite humor book is the Zombie Survival guide by Max Brooks. I also read a non fiction book in middle school about zombies and how they started in Africa and are commonly brought back by farmers who did voodoo to get free labor. I really enjoy reading about those things they are by far my favorite monsters.

    1. I'm reasonably new to the whole zombie thing. Apparently, zombies are the new vampires. I haven't read widely in the genre, but "Dust", "Forest of Hands and Teeth" and "Rot and Ruin" are all popular in the IMC. I took a quick glance at "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and was amused -- especially by the ninjas. I have earmarked "The Reapers are the Angels" as my first real zombie read. So far so good. Gross, but entertaining.

  6. I am afraid of zombies. My dad likes zombies. I don't mind mummies or vampires, but zombies give me nightmares. There is one kind in a book I read that I think are okay. The book is Beyonders: Seeds of Rebellion. The zombies in that book are a result of a treasure hunter trying to steal treasure from a wizard. They released a curse and it changed everyone within that country in a few days. It didn't spread more because the change was caused by worms that drink the blood then take over the body, and the country is surrounded by mountains to all sides and a large river along the other part. The worms don't like the cold, water, or sunlight. There are some people who changed and didn't get controlled by the worms. The are in charge of the country and try to kill the bad zombies, keep in people who go into the country, and prevent the spread of the worms.

  7. My favorite kind of character in a book it one where the character starts off as a bad guy, is on the bad side, or is misunderstood then becomes a good person. One example of this is in a series called the Five Ancestors where there is a character called Ying. He was a bad guy in the series until he is betrayed by his next in command and he is thrown in jail. He helps the other good characters after one of them breaks him out of jail. Unfortunatly he dies at the end. Another example is in the Beyonders books. Ferrin is a displacer and all of his kind works for the king as spies. The king is evil and Ferrin leaves the bad side and becomes the friend of Jason the main character and helps them along their adventures. So far it seems as though he is a good guy, but the next book is not out yet and he has betrayed them before. I hope he is a good guy.
